About MeMy most recent experience in the work force has been an autism support worker with Stepping Stones in Saint John N.B. This job has exposed me to a variety of behaviours children may exhibit in the classroom, some extreme cases, and I feel as though this exposure is extremely valuable when entering a profession in education.
Prior to working with Stepping Stones I was an after school art teacher for children grades 3-5, as well as a Sunday School teacher. Both of these jobs were a real joy in that I had discovered once the children were given structure and you showed a passion and excitement for the subject, the results can be fantastic! Some of children have been truly inspirational. In the summer of 2012 I was blessed with the experience of working with children and adults who faced a gamut of physical, and mental disabilities. But, despite these “limitations” we as the staff of Camp Rotary never looked at those individuals as having limitations. We were taught to “focus on ability” as the camp motto went, and so the summer was full of a flurry of activities, laughs, and memorable moments. From my camp experience as a counsellor, as well as my work with Stepping Stones, I may continue my education degree and specialize in teaching children or possibly adults with special needs. Again, always remembering to “focus on ability, ” which is an attitude that quite frankly is not only applicable to those campers, but all of us who require education. |
